Dental Care During Pregnancy

Lethbridge,AB Dentist

Taking good care of your teeth and gums is ESSENTIAL during pregnancy. Pregnancy causes increased hormone levels that can put you at greater risk of developing tooth infections, which can ultimately affect the health of your developing baby! That being said, maintaining regular dental check ups and a good dental routine at home can be very beneficial during this special time in your life…

Some important things to keep in mind:

Please make us aware if you are pregnant so we can take all the appropriate measures to ensure a safe visit for both you and your baby! Also, any medications or prenatal vitamins that you are taking should be brought to our attention.

Seeing your dentist for your regular dental check up and cleaning is very important. As a precautionary measure, try to make this appointment during your second trimester, as it is the best time for your growing baby.

Pregnant women are actually more susceptible to dental complications and these problems should be treated effectively to ensure adequate health of you and your baby. Pregnancy gingivitis is the most common dental concern among pregnant women, causing inflammation of your gums and possible bleeding and sensitivity; it is very important that you see your dentist if this occurs!

Exposure to x-rays should be avoided during the term of your pregnancy. During an emergency situation where x-rays are required, our staff will use extreme caution to protect you and your baby.

If you are experiencing morning sickness, try switching to a more bland tasting toothpaste, and rinse your mouth with water or a mouth rinse.

An efficient dental routine at home is extremely important. Continue to brush and floss your teeth regularly and maintain a healthy, vitamin enriched diet.

Please call or visit your dentist in Lethbridge, AB if you have any questions or concerns regarding your oral health while you are pregnant!

Controlling Bad Breath and Preventing Gingivitis

Bad breath can result from poor dental health, and can be made worse by the types of foods you eat and other unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as smoking. A good oral health routine involves brushing and flossing daily as well as regular dental check ups. Without taking these simple steps, food particles can remain in your mouth, which promotes bacterial growth between teeth, around the gums and on the tongue, causing bad breath!

Things you can do to prevent and help control bad breath:

  • keep your mouth clean by flossing and brushing: don’t forget your tongue!
  • maintain regular visits to your dentist
  • gargle with mouthwash
  • keep hydrated with water
  • avoid foods with strong odors
  • chew gum (temporary fix!)
  • avoid unhealthy habits such as smoking and chewing tobacco

Bad Breath, Lethbridge

If bad breath persists, visit your dentist – it could be the start of GUM (periodontal) DISEASE!

Gum disease begins with plaque that turns into tartar (calculus) over time. Tartar cannot be removed by regular brushing and flossing and can cause an infection at the point where the gums attach to the teeth (called gingivitis). As the infection gets worse, it can break down the gum tissue that attaches to the teeth, causing teeth to become loose and in danger of falling out.

Warning signs of gum disease:

  • red, sore, swollen gums
  • bleeding when you brush/floss
  • persistent bad breath
  • change in color of your gums
  • sensitive teeth/gums
  • receding gum line

… Make sure to see your Lethbridge dentist/hygienist on a regular basis to prevent tartar buildup and gingivitis & control bad breath!

Interested in Teeth Whitening?!

Are your teeth stained from drinking coffee or tea? Going to an event and want your smile to sparkle? Or possibly you smoke and are noticing your teeth aren’t as white as they used to be. There are plenty of reasons to want to bleach your teeth, and we have exactly what you’re looking for here at Destination Dentistry.

Just a couple things to be aware of:

Tooth whitening gel will only whiten natural teeth, so if you have crowns, bridges, fillings, or any other artificial dental work, be sure to consult Dr. Johnson first! Sensitivity is also common, but not harmful. If you do experience excess sensitivity, reduce usage time and/or frequency until the sensitivity subsides.

It is important that you apply the whitening get properly so you can get the best results possible and experience little to no sensitivity. Therefore, make sure to ask one of our staff members to give you detailed instructions!

Please call your Lethbridge Dentist today to find out more about whitening!

- Exposure to Fluoride -

There is currently a debate underway regarding the appropriate levels of fluoride that are being consumed by Canadians. For those of you that are unaware, fluoride is a natural mineral that is proven to have a positive effect on oral health by making teeth more resistant to decay. It can be delivered in many ways, such as in your toothpaste and water supply, or by getting fluoride treatments from your dental provider.

Fluoride vs. Toothpatse

According to the Canadian Dental Association, fluoridated toothpastes should be used twice a day. However, there are certain guidelines that need to be followed when dealing with the application of fluoride on children’s teeth:

Children from birth to age 3 should have their teeth and gums brushed regularly by an adult. Parents should consult their dentist by their child’s first birthday to determine whether they are at risk of developing tooth decay. If such risk exists, they should be brushing their child’s teeth with a minimal amount of fluoridated toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice) and encouraging them not to swallow it. If the child is not at risk, they should have their teeth brushed only using a toothbrush moistened with water.

From the ages of 3 to 6, children should be assisted by an adult while brushing their teeth. The amount of fluoridated toothpaste they should be using should be only the size of a green pea. Fluoride mouth rinsing is not recommended for children under the age of 6.

Fluoride vs. Drinking Water

The Canadian Dental Association and our team at Destination Dentistry in Lethbridge are in acceptance of the fluoridation of municipal drinking water. Having minimal levels of fluoride in our water supply and having it regularly monitored and adjusted to avoid fluctuations is considered a safe and effective way to prevent dental caries in all members of the community. A healthy balance should be maintained to properly receive the benefits of preventing tooth decay and avoid the risk of developing dental fluorosis, a change in the appearance of teeth from higher than optimal consumption of fluoride (most noticeably appears as small white flecks on a child’s tooth).

“Provided that the daily intake of fluoride is carefully monitored, fluoride is considered to be a most important health measure in maintaining oral health for all Canadians.” CDA

Relay for Life 2011

Lethbridge Dentist
Relay for Life

This year our team was able to participate in Relay for Life, an event put on by the Canadian Cancer Society to raise awareness and provide support for those who are battling cancer, celebrate those who have survived and remember friends and loved ones who lost their fight against cancer.  We walked through the night in hopes of helping to find a cure for this terrible disease. It gave us the opportunity to fundraise and help toward the fight to make cancer history!

Take a look at this video!

We took the time to honor all the precious memories shared with our friends and family and pay tribute to everyone who has dealt with cancer by making luminaries that were placed along the track. During the ceremony, the candles inside the luminaries were lit – what a beautiful, heartfelt walk that was… A Little Bit Longer video

Angie

I can confidently say that we are all looking forward to Relay for Life 2012!

This year, the Lethbridge Relay was able to raise $284,000. All funds raised help the Canadian Cancer Society in achieving its mission:

“the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer”.

Thank you to everyone who helped organize this event, and who participated and helped our Destination Dentistry team in Lethbridge raise money for this incredible cause!

Why INVISALIGN Could Work for YOU!

How Invisalign Works

I love Invisalign, it is an amazing product and our patients love it. It is a clear alternative to metal braces!   Comfortable, invisible aligners cover your teeth and gently shift them into place. Each set of aligners are custom made, based on individual patient needs and are alternated approximately every two weeks to gradually give you YOUR perfect smile. When using Invisalign, removable trays are worn throughout the entire day, except to eat and maintain normal care of your teeth by brushing and flossing.

Invisalign vs. Conventional Braces

While both Invisalign and regular braces straighten your teeth and help correct problems such as over/under bites, crowding and spacing, only Invisalign can provide the following results:

  • Zero restrictions on the types of food you can consume
  • Remove whenever needed
  • Nearly invisible teeth-straightening
  • Allows for regular flossing/brushing, leading to improved oral health
  • Comfortable and easy to wear, providing minimal irritation and discomfort
  • Less visits to your dentist during orthodontic treatment

At Destination Dentistry we have treated dozens of our patients with Invisalign, and they have all been very satisfied with the procedure and they always love the results they get. Invisalign can drastically improve the look of your smile and give you that extra confidence booster!
