Dental Crown - Restorative, Cosmetic & Dental Implant Applications

Dental terms can be quite literal. Where a filling fills in a cleaned out tooth, a dental crown sits on top of the trimmed tooth. Dental crowns are also referred to as dental caps or tooth caps, and form a new protective surface for the teeth on which they are bonded.

Crowns are a popular treatment in dental health services and serve several purposes:

  • To restore a broken, worn, or decayed tooth.
  • To strengthen a tooth.
  • To change the appearance of a tooth (for cosmetic reasons).
  • To replace a missing tooth; as used in conjunction with dental implant surgery.

Dental Crown Procedure at Destination Dentistry

At many clinics, a dental crown procedure is a two-appointment process. Dr. Kinniburgh, on the other hand, is pleased to offer patients the ease and convenience of a CEREC crown . Destination Dentistry has invested in the CEREC computerized system, which eliminates impressions, teeth molds and return visits.

The dental crown procedure begins with the administration of anaesthetic and the cleaning of the tooth. Next, a digital camera takes an optical impression and sends pictures and information to a milling machine, where a CEREC crown is created from a porcelain block within 20 minutes.

This computer-generated dental crown fits perfectly and then requires only trimming and polishing. CEREC veneers, onlays, and inlays are also possible with this amazing system.

Dental Implants and Dental Crowns

The other application of a dental crown is in conjunction with dental implant surgery. This remarkable procedure has been available for a relatively short time, and allows dentists to replace missing teeth without damaging neighboring healthy teeth.

In this dental crown procedure, a titanium implant is implanted into the jawbone and a porcelain or CEREC crown in mounted in place. The tooth looks and feels like a natural tooth!
